Law Firm Recruiting Swag: What to Order for OCI Season
Recruiting season is the one time of year your firm’s brand sits physically in the hands of hundreds of students who are actively comparing you to other firms. Most of that gear gets decided in a rush by a recruiting coordinator with nine other fires burning. It deserves ten minutes of actual thought, so here they are.
The three moments that need gear
The career fair table. Students walk past forty tables. Yours needs one giveaway worth stopping for, not five that aren’t. A quality water bottle or a genuinely good tote beats a pile of pens, and the table itself needs the firm mark done well: a clean runner or tablecloth, not a wrinkled banner.
Callbacks. Small and considered wins here. A padfolio waiting at the seat, a notebook with the firm mark, something the student uses that afternoon and then keeps using through finals. Callback gifts are the quiet ones people remember, precisely because most firms skip them.
Offer packages. This is the kit that arrives while a student is deciding between you and another firm. A well-built box (quarter-zip, drinkware, a handwritten note) reads as “this is what working here feels like.” A lone branded pen reads the same way, unfortunately.
What students keep, and what they toss
Twenty-seven years of orders have made this list pretty clear.
They keep: insulated bottles and mugs, padfolios and notebooks (exam adjacent, always useful), decent totes, blankets, quarter-zips they’d wear to class, tech accessories that actually work.
They toss: flimsy pens, stress balls, anything that feels like it was bought by the thousand to fill space. A good pen is a different story, and we sell plenty of them. The key word is good.
The test we use with firms: fewer items, better items. One kept object beats five discarded ones, and it’s usually not more expensive to do it that way.
Don’t forget the summer associates
Summer associate welcome kits are recruiting too, because summers talk to their classmates. Gear they use all summer (tumblers, totes, notebooks, a good quarter-zip for the office AC) does more for next year’s class than anything you hand out at a fair.
The deadline math
Career fair and callback dates don’t move, so work backward from them. Digital proofs come back in 24 to 48 hours. Standard production runs about two weeks door to door. That means a firm deciding in early September is comfortable for October events, and even a mid-season “we’re out of callback gifts” call is fixable, because approved proofs make reorders fast.
If your recruiting calendar is already set, the smartest thing you can do is send the dates with the logo. We build the schedule from the back.
